It was only the second victory in the last eleven games for Roberto Mancini’s side. The 53-year-old had assumed the post of national coach after missing out on qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
In the match in Poland, Italy were already unlucky before the late goal when Jorginho (1.) and Lorenzo Insigne (30.) scored their battens – The decision about winning the group and entering the final round from 5 to 9 June 2019 is now between European champions Portugal and Italy.

The visitors with Milos Veljkovic from Werder Bremen and Mijat Gacinovic from Eintracht Frankfurt in their ranks, however, could not use the majority after the break to their advantage.
